XML & YAML to JSON Converter — Parse Structured Data Instantly
Convert XML and YAML to formatted JSON instantly. Auto-detect input format, validate syntax, and export structured data files — free and 100% in-browser privacy.
How XML & YAML to JSON Conversion Works
From markup or config file to normalized JSON in three direct steps.
Paste or Drop the Source
Load an XML document, a YAML manifest, or a Docker Compose file into the input editor — Auto-Detect picks the parser, or you can lock the mode yourself.
Lint & Transform
The linter flags unclosed tags and bad indentation before conversion, then the tree is mapped recursively into clean, structured JSON.
Review & Export
Read the pretty-printed result with attributes under @attributes, switch to compact output, then copy it or download the .json file.
Utilvo In-Browser vs Cloud Format Converters
Why config files with credentials belong in a local converter.
| Feature | Utilvo In-Browser | Cloud Converter Sites |
|---|---|---|
| Data Residency | Parsing happens on your device only | Documents are POSTed to remote servers |
| Secrets in Config | Safe for YAML with API keys and tokens | Credentials transit third-party logs |
| Turnaround Latency | Instant — converts on every edit | Upload queue plus processing wait |
| Error Feedback | Inline linting as you type | Single error message after submit |
| Offline Capability | Works fully offline once loaded | Requires a live connection per file |
Engineering Notes on Structured Data Mapping
Where XML, YAML, and JSON genuinely differ — and how the converter resolves the mismatches.
Attributes Have No JSON Home
XML lets one element carry both attributes and text; JSON objects do not. The converter maps attributes into a reserved @attributes key so <user id="7">jane</user> becomes predictable, lossless structure instead of flattened guesswork.
YAML Types Are Inferred
YAML quotes are optional, so a plain yes, 1.50, or null silently becomes a boolean, number, or null in JSON. That is faithful to the spec — but quote values you need as literal strings when a schema downstream expects them.
Auto-Detect Is a Heuristic
The first non-whitespace character decides the parser: < routes to the XML tree parser, anything else to the YAML reader. Comment-only prefixes and XML declarations are skipped first, and manual mode override handles the pathological cases.
Repeated Tags Become Arrays
XML says nothing about arrays — <item> three times is just three elements. The converter collapses repeated sibling names into a JSON array automatically, which is the convention most JSON-schema tooling expects on the other side.
Pre-Flight Checklist Before Converting Config Files
Run through these checks whenever structured data changes format.
Fix Lint Errors First
Convert from a valid source — a lint warning about indentation or an unclosed tag means the JSON would silently miss subtrees.
Redact Secrets Before Sharing
The tool keeps data local, but any JSON you paste into tickets, repos, or chat is exposed — scrub tokens before the export leaves your machine.
Validate Against a Schema
Conversion guarantees structure, not meaning. Run the output through JSON Schema or your API contract before wiring it into a deployment.
Watch Quoted Scalars
YAML versions like 1.0, on/off, and country codes parse as numbers or booleans — wrap them in quotes if the target system needs text.
Structured Data Formats Compared
The formats the converter touches, their strengths, and where each one wins.
| Format | Syntax | Types | Comments | Converter Support | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XML | Tag-based markup | Text only | Inline <!-- --> | Full parse + @attributes map | SOAP envelopes, RSS, document markup |
| YAML | Indentation-based | Inferred scalars | # to end of line | Full parse with auto-detect | Kubernetes, CI pipelines, Compose files |
| JSON | Braces & brackets | string/number/bool/null | None in the spec | Output target, pretty or compact | APIs, configs, logs, data exchange |
| NDJSON | One object per line | Same as JSON | None | Via manual per-line conversion | Streaming logs and bulk imports |
| TOML | Key = value tables | Declared | # to end of line | Convert to JSON via copy into YAML | Rust/Python project metadata |
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before transforming a configuration file.
1How do I convert XML to JSON online for free?
Paste your XML document into the input editor (or drop a file), and the converter parses it instantly with DOMParser and outputs formatted JSON on the right. Attributes land under an @attributes key so no tag metadata is lost — copy or download the result when you are done.
2Can it also convert YAML to JSON?
Yes. Auto-Detect mode inspects the first meaningful character — < means XML, a key or comment means YAML — and routes the input through the right parser automatically. You can also lock the mode manually for unambiguous conversion of config files.
3How are XML attributes represented in the JSON output?
Attributes declared on an element are collected into a dedicated @attributes object nested under that element, keeping property values separate from element text so the round-trip structure stays predictable.
4Is my data uploaded to a server during conversion?
No. Parsing and conversion run entirely inside your browser using the DOM parser and native JavaScript recursion. API keys inside server YAML files, internal XML feeds, and customer data never leave your device.
5What happens when my XML or YAML has a syntax error?
The linter flags the broken line and describes the problem — unclosed tags, bad indentation, or invalid characters — before any conversion is attempted, so you can fix the source instead of guessing why the output is empty.
6Does it handle large configuration files?
Yes. The editors use fixed-height scroll bounds so multi-hundred-kilobyte manifests and Docker Compose files convert without freezing the page, and output is pretty-printed by default with minified output available.
