The AT&T DjVu Architecture: JB2 Text Masks and IW44 Wavelets
Developed at AT&T Labs by Yann LeCun, Léon Bottou, and Patrick Haffner, the DjVu file format was engineered to solve the massive storage requirements of high-resolution scanned color documents. Instead of applying uniform raster compression, DjVu separates each page into three discrete physical layers: a high-resolution foreground bi-level mask (compressed using JB2 pattern matching), a lower-resolution smooth background image (compressed using IW44 wavelet transforms), and a foreground color map.
The JB2 compression engine groups identical letterforms and symbols across a page, storing each unique character shape only once in a dictionary and recording only position offsets for subsequent occurrences. Concurrently, the IW44 wavelet compressor progressively downsamples continuous paper grain, illustrations, and photographic plates without the high-frequency blocking artifacts typical of traditional DCT transforms.
Despite its technical efficiency, DjVu lacks native rendering capabilities in modern web browsers, iOS, Android, and popular e-readers like Amazon Kindle. Utilvo resolves this limitation through a high-performance, client-side decoding pipeline. By reconstituting JB2 text masks and wavelet layers into standard pixel and vector streams directly within your browser, Utilvo produces universal PDF, EPUB, MOBI, PNG, and WebP outputs with zero cloud latency and complete data security.
