The ZSoft PCX Standard: Run-Length Encoding and Planar Graphics

Created in 1985 by ZSoft Corporation for PC Paintbrush on MS-DOS and documented under the ZSoft PCX specification on Wikipedia↗, the .pcx container became the first widely adopted raster image format for IBM PC-compatible personal computers. During the 1980s and early 1990s, PCX served as the foundational graphic standard across early MS-DOS games, desktop publishing packages, fax software, and early Windows applications.

Every valid PCX file starts with an exact 128-byte header beginning with manufacturer byte 0x0A, followed by the version number, encoding method (where 1 signifies PCX Run-Length Encoding), bits per pixel per plane, image boundary coordinates (Xmin, Ymin, Xmax, Ymax), horizontal and vertical DPI metrics, a 16-color EGA palette table, and the number of color planes. Image data is encoded using a compact byte-level RLE algorithm: if the top two bits of a byte are set (0xC0), the lower 6 bits define the run count (1 to 63), followed immediately by the raw pixel or index value.

Because modern web browsers, smartphones, and graphic software suites have phased out native PCX decoders, accessing legacy art, archival faxes, and historical game textures requires conversion. Utilvo bridges this divide with an ultra-fast client-side PCX decoder. Running entirely in your browser memory via typed arrays and HTML5 Canvas, our engine reconstructs 1-bit monochrome, 16-color EGA, 256-color VGA, and 24-bit Truecolor PCX files into universal modern standards with zero server uploads and zero data latency.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ZSoft Paintbrush .pcx decoding, browser privacy, and target formats.

What is a PCX file and why convert it?
PCX (Picture eXchange) is a raster image format developed by ZSoft Corporation for PC Paintbrush on MS-DOS. Because modern web browsers and mobile devices cannot display PCX natively, converting them to standard formats like PNG, JPG, WebP, or SVG is required for modern viewing and archiving.
Are my retro graphics or scans uploaded to external servers?
No. The Utilvo PCX Converter processes your images entirely inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your confidential files never touch external servers or cloud storage, guaranteeing absolute privacy.
Does this tool support 256-color VGA and 24-bit truecolor PCX files?
Yes. Our decoder parses the 128-byte PCX header, decompresses scanline RLE data across all planes, extracts 16-color EGA palettes from the header, reads 256-color VGA palettes from the trailing file bytes, and decodes 24-bit 3-plane RGB truecolor images.
Can I batch convert multiple PCX files at once?
Yes. You can drop multiple PCX files simultaneously. The engine processes each file in queue and allows you to download them individually or bundled together in a single compressed ZIP archive.
What output format is best for converting PCX images?
For pixel art, diagrams, and illustrations, PNG is best because its lossless compression preserves crisp pixel boundaries. For photographic scans, JPG or WebP offer smaller file sizes. For vector containers, SVG is recommended.
