Workflow

How PDF Overlay Works

Superimpose letterheads, stamps, or watermarks in 3 client-side steps.

01
Load Base & Overlay PDFs

Upload your content document and your overlay stationery or stamp. Both streams parse locally without leaving your browser.

02
Configure Opacity & Scope

Choose whether to stamp all pages or just the first page, and slide opacity from 10% to 100% for perfect transparency.

03
Composite & Export PDF

PDF-Lib embeds the overlay as a native Form XObject sub-resource and outputs an ISO 32000-compliant document instantly.

Capabilities

Four Built-In PDF Overlay Features

Engineered for vector precision, multi-page stationery stamping, and transparent layer compositing.

Vector Overlay

Form XObject Compositing

Embeds the overlay page as an ISO 32000 Form XObject directly into the base document's content stream without converting to pixels.

Export: Preserved vector paths
Page Targeting

Variable Scope Control

Apply overlay stamps globally across all pages or target strictly the first title page for letterheads and cover sheets.

Export: Target page range
Transparency Control

ExtGState Opacity Blending

Configures standard CA and ca alpha values from 10% to 100% for subtle watermarking or bold letterheads.

Export: Calibrated alpha channel
Fidelity Assurance

Lossless Vector Preservation

Retains 100% selectable text, embedded fonts, and vector paths across both superimposed document layers.

Export: High-fidelity .pdf export

Architecture

Superimposing Digital Letterheads & Stationery onto Invoices

How PDF-Lib coordinates native Form XObject sub-resources and alpha transparency dictionaries.

Form XObject Stream Injection

Rather than merging raw content operator streams, the overlay page is encapsulated as an independent `/XObject` dictionary. This prevents graphics state leaks (like unclosed clipping paths or color transform matrices) between the two files.

ExtGState Alpha Transparency

To achieve non-destructive transparency, the compositor injects an `/ExtGState` resource setting `/CA` (stroking alpha) and `/ca` (non-stroking alpha) according to the user opacity slider before issuing the `Do` invocation operator.

MediaBox & CropBox Coordinate Scaling

The engine inspects each target page's bounding box and computes an affine transformation matrix (`cm` operator) so the overlay stretches or centers precisely across standard US Letter or ISO A4 dimensions.

Resource Dictionary Deduplication

When overlaying across hundreds of pages, the engine reuses a single embedded Form XObject reference across every target page dictionary, ensuring output file sizes increase by only a few kilobytes.

Verification

Comparing Blueprint Revisions with Transparent Layer Overlays

Follow these best practices before compiling your overlaid document.

Verify Page Aspect Ratios

Ensure your overlay template matches the aspect ratio of the base document (e.g. Portrait A4 vs Landscape US Letter) to avoid geometric distortion.

Test Opacity & Readability

For background watermarks, 20% to 40% opacity is ideal. For official letterhead headers and footers, select 80% to 100% opacity.

Confirm Target Page Scope

Select "First Page Only" if applying a cover sheet letterhead or formal invoice header. Choose "All Pages" for continuous confidentiality stamps.

Review Background Transparency

Verify that the overlay PDF does not contain an opaque solid white background box that would obscure the base document text.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about PDF overlaying, Form XObjects, and opacity settings.

1How does PDF Overlay technically combine two documents?

The tool parses both PDF binary streams in WebAssembly, imports the first page of your overlay document as a native Form XObject sub-resource, and appends it to the content stream of the target pages. It applies an Extended Graphic State (ExtGState) dictionary for alpha transparency, allowing the overlay to composite seamlessly over existing vector paths and text without rasterizing either layer.

2Does applying an overlay rasterize text or degrade graphic quality?

No. Unlike image-based watermarking tools that flatten pages into low-resolution bitmaps, our overlay engine retains full vector paths, Bézier curves, and embedded font glyphs. Both your underlying content and the superimposed template remain infinitely scalable and crystal clear at any zoom level or print resolution.

3Can I overlay a multi-page PDF onto different pages?

The current tool uses page one of the overlay document as the master template or stamp, which can be applied either to the first page or replicated across all pages of the target PDF. If your project requires multi-page pagination or varied stationery templates across chapters, you can run successive batch passes or split the document first.

4What happens if the base and overlay pages have different dimensions?

The overlay Form XObject automatically scales to fit the exact bounding MediaBox and CropBox coordinates of each target page. Whether your base document is standard US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) or ISO A4 (210 x 297 mm), the overlay aligns precisely across the printable canvas.

5How does opacity adjustment work under ISO 32000 standards?

When you adjust the opacity slider, the engine assigns an alpha constant (CA and ca values ranging from 0.0 to 1.0) inside the ExtGState resource dictionary. When modern PDF viewers render the page, they compute standard Porter-Duff alpha blending, preserving background readability beneath dark stamps or rich graphical letterheads.

6Are my files uploaded or transmitted to an external server?

Zero bytes of your files leave your device. All parsing, font referencing, graphic state compositing, and serialization occur directly within your browser's local sandbox using client-side JavaScript and PDF-Lib. Your private legal contracts, financial sheets, and signatures remain strictly confidential.
