What is Zalgo Text?

Zalgo text (also known as glitch text, void text, or creepy text) is a form of digital text modification that stacks thousands of Unicode combining diacritical marks on top of regular latin letters. Combining marks are designed to be rendered as small accents (like accents, tildes, or circles) over a single base letter.

When hundreds of these combining characters are stacked continuously, browsers attempt to draw them all, resulting in a distorted, messy, and corrupted design that flows over paragraph boundaries. Zalgo is widely used in gaming tags, creepypasta channels, and Discord bios.

How to Use the Zalgo Text Generator

Creating glitchy, corrupted text is simple. First, enter your desired phrase into the "Source Text" field. Use the "Glitch Height" slider to determine how far the combining diacritics extend above and below the base characters—higher levels create more "chaos" and may overlap other lines of text. You can also toggle specific corruption directions (Above, Middle, or Below) to customize the look of the distortion. Once generated, simply click "Copy" to use your text on platforms like Discord, Reddit, or in your social media bios.

Why Does Zalgo Text Look Glitchy?

The "glitch" effect is not a font change, but a result of how Unicode handles combining marks. In standard typography, a combining diacritic (like an accent) is meant to be placed over a single letter. However, the Unicode standard does not strictly limit how many marks can be stacked on one character. By stacking dozens of these marks vertically, the browser's rendering engine is forced to draw them outside the standard line height, resulting in the signature "bleeding" or "void" effect that characterizes Zalgo text.
